Charging wireless is now possible

Pardon the cliche, but it's one of the holiest of Holy Grails of technology: Wireless power. And while early lab experiments have been able to "beam" electricity a few feet to power a light bulb, the day when our laptops and cell phones can charge without having to plug them in to a wall socket still seems decades in the future.

Nokia, however, has taken another baby step in that direction with the invention of a cell phone that recharges itself using a unique system: It harvests ambient radio waves from the air, and turns that energy into usable power. Enough, at least, to keep a cell phone from running out of juice.

While "traditional" (if there is such a thing) wireless power systems are specifically designed with a transmitter and receiver in mind, Nokia's system isn't finicky about where it gets its wireless waves. TV, radio, other mobile phone systems -- all of this stuff just bounces around the air and most of it is wasted, absorbed into the environment or scattered into the ether. Nokia picks up all the bits and pieces of these waves and uses the collected electromagnetic energy to create electrical current, then uses that to recharge the phone's battery. A huge range of frequencies can be utilized by the system (there's no other way, really, as the energy in any given wave is infinitesimal). It's the same idea that Tesla was exploring 100 years ago, just on a tiny scale.

Mind you, harvesting ambient electromagnetic energy is never going to offer enough electricity to power your whole house or office, but it just might be enough to keep a cell phone alive and kicking. Currently Nokia is able to harvest all of 5 milliwatts from the air; the goal is to increase that to 20 milliwatts in the short term and 50 milliwatts down the line. That wouldn't be enough to keep the phone alive during an active call, but would be enough to slowly recharge the cell phone battery while it's in standby mode, theoretically offering infinite power -- provided you're not stuck deep underground where radio waves can't penetrate.

Nokia says it hopes to commercialize the technology in three to five years.

Nokia 888

About Nokia 888

Design Concept: "Form follows you"
A personal mobile communication device which lets you be free and fun. It is light, simple and carefree. You can change its form according to your needs during the day.

Target Market:
It is targeted to the young consumers who are likely to be active and take place in a lot of different activities.

Why?
Because they move and change place too much. They do a lot of different things during the day. So that’s what my design offers : to adjust to the moment, the place and the function.

Technologies that are used:
It uses liquid battery, speech recognition, flexible touch screen, touch sensitive body cover which lets it understand and adjust to the environment. It has a simple programmable body mechanism so that it changes forms in different situations.

Functions of the Design:
You dont have to carry it in your pocket or on your wrist. You can carry it anywhere, in anyform. You can roll it, bend it, put on your clothes like a clip. It also makes some form changes that makes it more ergonomical: i.e. when you want to talk on the phone, the body form turns into the form of the good old telephone. You can personalize these forms and record them. So it fits you the best in the way that you have chosen. The functions that it has also create a feeling of electronical pet, as it senses your moves, understand what you want, respond you in the best way. It learns you, to fit you better. Also e-motions lets you send forms to the other 888 users. It could be the shape of a heart or a small dance. This way you can talk without words.

User Interaction:
E-motions… It means electronical motions that 888 has. You can send and receive forms from / to friends. You can send a heart shape to your girlfriend, so her telephone turns into an icon of heart. Or you can send a dancing form to your friends to call them to the party tonight. This is the fun side of the product. If we look from the functionality side, 888 is quite flexible. You can put it into your pocket, roll it and make it smaller, or put on your wrist when you want to make a video call on the go. If you want to talk like a normal telephone, there you have your telephone shape. We go through a lot of places and situations in the daily life, so it seems like one form is not enough.

Unique features:
You can change the form of the body. Not just the color. And you can do the same by sending an e-motion to your friend.

Inspiration:
The idea is that “the perfect form” does not exist. “Form follows you”
We create the perfect form for each function.

Orbita Mouse -- now a reality!

Here is a really interesting mouse which we’ve seen in the past when it was only a concept and we thought that it would never see the sunlight. It’s called Orbita Mouse and according to its manufacturer, Cyber E Sport, this is “world’s first wireless 3-axis mouse.” This mouse was designed with an intuitive control center which is destined to redefine the limitations of a conventional mouse.

Orbita Mouse

This innovative mouse is based on a revolutionary continuous scrolling which is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Mac OS X 10.3.9 and later. Like aforementioned, the Orbita Mouse is connected wirelessly to your PC or Mac and it communicates with 2.4GHz speed with “zero lag”.

The Orbita Mouse will be available as of January 2009 for a price of $98.50. Only you can tell if it’s worth the price, and if you’ll buy one of these, let us know how it works. Check out the pictures, and the video of an early version of the mouse below the post.

Playstaion Portable 3000

If you liked the old PSP 2000 and you found it quite ok, I think there will be no reason why you shouldn’t like Sony’s new PSP 3000 upgrade. The main difference between the two it is that the new PSP 3000 has brighter, increased contrast. PSP 3000 also features a wider color gamut screen, which, in my opinion will make new friends among PSP lovers. As we expected, the interlacing issues have not been completely solved, but I believe it looks better than old PSP 2000.

So would you really want to upgrade your PSP 2000? Not yet I should say, because the interlace is not way better on the PSP 3000. Another reason for which you may want to stick to your old PSP is that the games you can play are the same and the hakers didn’t have enough time to get their hands on the new PSP and mess a little with it. As you know, Sony encountered problems with piracy, so I believe that Sony had enhanced the anti-piracy measures, but I don’t think this will be a problem for the haking community as they managed to hack the 5.0 release just two days after the launch.

Priced at $199 it features a microphone for built-in Skype chatting and the Home button have been re-labeled. So, what’s your opinion, is it worthy to rush in and buy the new PSP 3000?

Sony's Playstation 3

1. This machine is really quite heavy.
2. This machine is aesthetically sleek smart.
3. This machine is surprisingly quiet given its immense processing grunt and it certainly puts Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the shade in that department.

If you have a Full HDTV showing 1080P this is the console for you. The quality of this console is outstanding. It looks the business and is replicated when the Full HD games load up. (Be careful not all games play in 1080P - tells you on the back of the game). The ability to browse the net, download demos and games from the Sony site and play against people from all over the world is as you would expect but you also get the ability to download all your photos and store them on a 60 GB hard disk drive. Play Blue ray movies and control it all using your wireless controller. You can even plug your memory cards straight into your console. All in all, i can't wait to get really stuck into this machine and see what it can do and what they will release for it in the coming months.

Pros:
Card slots Wireless controller Blu ray capability Stunning looks Simple menu system

Cons:
No HDMI cable included in the box and really too pricey at $499.00
